The first trip. Three women, Gangtok.
Jassi, Shikha and Shilpi — and a local child who decided she belonged in the photo. Frozen Tsomgo Lake, a few days later.
Three women, a cable car, and a company nobody had heard of. This is not a brand shoot. It is the only honest answer to the question every woman asks before she books a women-only trip: has anybody actually done this before me?
February 2015
The first birthday cut on a Jugni trip.
A hotel room in Gangtok. A cake nobody planned for. Days after these women had met as strangers.
Every women-only travel group claims that strangers become friends. This is what it actually looked like the first time it happened to us — badly lit, blurred, and entirely real. It has been part of Jugni trips ever since.
The first international trip. Istanbul.
Outside the Hagia Sophia. Six women, one grey Istanbul morning, and the first Jugni passports getting stamped.
The first time a group of Jugni women left India together. For several of them it was a first passport stamp — the trip that turned a domestic idea into an international one.
The first trip to Europe. Salzburg.
A horse carriage in the old town, Salzburg. Nobody was in a hurry.
Europe was the moment we understood the pace of a Jugni trip. Not a checklist of monuments — a carriage ride nobody needed to take, on an afternoon nobody wanted to rush.
The first Ladakh trip. Pangong.
Pangong. Twelve women, 14,000 feet, and not one of them standing still.
Ladakh became the trip that defined what a Jugni group looks like at altitude — permits handled, oxygen carried, and a photograph in which absolutely nobody is behaving themselves.

The name
Why We Are
Called Jugni
Jugni means a female firefly — independent, free, and able to bring light when the world gets dark. A firefly does not wait for someone else to illuminate the way. She carries her own light.
In India, a woman’s travel decisions are still often made by the entire family. Jugni exists to change that — a women-only travel community for women who choose curiosity over hesitation, and who would rather see the world on their own terms. Women arrive quietly, sometimes nervously. They rarely leave that way.
When the world gets dark, a Jugni does not search for light. She becomes it.

Is Jugni a Solo Trip
or a Group Trip?
Both — and that is the entire point. Travelling with Jugni is solo travel with a safety net. You come alone. So does almost everyone else. We bring together solo women travellers who do not know each other, and build a women-only group around them.
You do not need a friend to come with you. You do not need a plus one. You do not need to explain to anybody why you are travelling on your own. Test the waters without carrying the planning, the logistics or the safety risk — and keep your own space if that is what you would rather have.

Tamanna runs Jugni. Trip design, group culture, safety standards, and the decisions that shape what a Jugni journey actually feels like — those sit with her. If you message our WhatsApp before a trip, you are speaking to her team, and often to her.
Founder
Nitesh Chauhan
A Delhi University Economics graduate who worked at Micromax and PepsiCo before this. In Varanasi, a solo woman traveller told him a company helping women travel safely in India would be a wonderful thing. He left the corporate job and spent eleven years finding out whether she was right.
The question we get asked most
“Can a women-only travel company founded by a man actually be trusted?”
It is a fair question, and we would rather answer it here than have you wonder about it quietly.
Trust of this kind cannot be claimed. It can only be earned, one journey at a time, by women deciding for themselves whether we deserved it. Five thousand of them have now made that decision.
Jugni is run by Tamanna as CEO. Most of our trips are led by women. Some are led by Nitesh, who has been leading Jugni groups since 2015 and still does — because after eleven years he is not willing to run the company only from a desk.
If that is a dealbreaker for you, we would far rather you knew it now than discovered it at the airport. Every trip page tells you who is leading, and you are welcome to ask before you pay.

What Safety Actually Means
for Solo Women Travellers
Every travel company says it is safe. Almost none will tell you what they actually do. Here is what safety looks like in practice — the decisions you will probably never notice, which is rather the point.

Nobody starts a trip alone
On a trip where women fly in from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Dubai, the easiest thing is to send each woman onward as she lands. We do not do that. The group waits, adjusts, and moves together — so that no woman’s first hour in an unfamiliar country is spent by herself.

Hotels chosen for location, not stars
A cheaper hotel forty minutes outside the centre is how many operators protect their margin. It is also how a woman ends up in a taxi alone at 11pm. We pay more to be central, and we will tell you the hotel name before you pay.

We have never cancelled a trip
Not once — not even when only three women had signed up and running it made no commercial sense. In the early years we went anyway. If you have booked, you are going. That is the whole policy.

When the world rushed back after COVID, we waited
We were among the last women-only operators to resume trips. Not because we were slow, but because resuming earlier would have meant taking a risk with somebody else’s daughter to protect our own revenue. Safety is what you do when nobody is watching and it costs you money.

The broom in Himachal
On an early trip, the group stopped at a public toilet in poor condition. The women were visibly uncomfortable. Nitesh bought a broom and detergent and cleaned it himself. Hospitality is not luxury. It is noticing discomfort before anybody has to ask.

What we will not promise
We cannot promise the world will always be predictable. No travel company honestly can, and you should be sceptical of any that does. What we can promise is that every decision is made with the comfort of the group ahead of the convenience of the company.

People expect us to name countries, or numbers, or reviews. The real answer is the friendships. Women arrive from different cities, decades and professions, knowing nobody. They share airport waits, long drives, missed turns, inside jokes and birthdays. Many go home having gained something more durable than a passport stamp.
They plan holidays together afterwards. They visit each other’s homes. They turn up at each other’s weddings. Countries become memories — the people become part of your life. If Jugni played even a small part in putting those women in the same room, that is the achievement we would choose.

A letter from Nitesh
Eleven years ago I could not have imagined that one conversation in Varanasi would become a community of thousands of women travelling across the world.
I still stand at airports and watch a Jugni group getting ready to leave. Some are flying internationally for the first time. Some are on their tenth trip. Some arrive nervous. Some have reels planned before take-off. Almost all of them come home with a story they had not planned on.
