Itinerary

  • Arrival Bagdora/Siliguri

    Transfer to Phuentsholing

Take a flight to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and arrive before 11:30 AM on 27th December. From here, we’ll begin our scenic road trip to Phuentsholing, the gateway to Bhutan.

Located in southern Bhutan, Phuentsholing is the country’s financial, industrial, and trading hub. Bordering the Indian town of Jaigaon, it offers a fascinating contrast between two cultures. While Jaigaon is lively and bustling, Phuentsholing is clean, peaceful, and remarkably well-organized. As Bhutan’s main entry point from India, this vibrant border town is where your unforgettable Bhutan New Year journey begins.

Overnight Stay Hotel Druk at Phuentsholing.

  • 145 km/ approx. 4-5hours drive

Drive to Paro, a scenic journey of around 4 hours. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the iconic Paro Dzong.

Also known as Rinpung Dzong or the “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels,” it is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historic fortresses. Built in the 16th century on the site of a monastery founded by Guru Rinpoche, it once protected the Paro Valley from Tibetan invasions.

Despite surviving the devastating 1897 earthquake, the dzong was damaged by a fire in 1907. It was later restored, and today remains one of Bhutan’s finest examples of traditional architecture. Every year, it hosts the vibrant Paro Tshechu, where the sacred Thongdrol (a giant religious Thangka) is ceremonially displayed.

  • Tiger Nest Hike

Tiger’s Nest awaits! Today’s highlight is the iconic Taktsang Monastery, with a 4–5 hour round-trip hike.

After an early breakfast, begin your trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan’s most sacred and famous landmark. Perched dramatically on a cliff at 3,000 metres, this breathtaking monastery overlooks the Paro Valley and is an unforgettable part of any Bhutan itinerary.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava) flew here on the back of a tigress from Tibet, meditated in a cave for three months, and introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. Today, Tiger’s Nest is one of the country’s most important pilgrimage sites.

The trek begins with a steady uphill climb of about an hour to the hillside cafeteria, offering spectacular views of the monastery. Continue on a steeper trail for another 90 minutes to reach the monastery, where breathtaking scenery and a deeply spiritual atmosphere await.

  • 115 km/ approx. 4 hours drive

After breakfast, we’ll drive to Punakha, one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys. En route, we’ll stop at the stunning Dochula Pass before visiting the sacred Chimi Lhakhang.

Dochula Pass, located at an altitude of 3,100 metres, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range on clear days. The pass is famous for its 108 memorial chortens, built by the Queen Mother to honour Bhutanese soldiers. It is also home to an important temple, making it a place of both natural beauty and spiritual significance.

Later, we’ll visit Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility. Built in 1499, the monastery is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kinley, the legendary Divine Madman, who spread Buddhist teachings through humour, songs, and unconventional methods.

The monastery is closely associated with Bhutan’s unique fertility traditions. Couples from around the world visit to seek blessings for children, and the temple is famous for its symbolic wooden phallus and colourful artwork, believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune. Surrounded by peaceful countryside and prayer flags, Chimi Lhakhang offers a fascinating glimpse into Bhutan’s rich culture and traditions.

  • 75 km/ approx. 3 hour drive

Drive to Thimphu (approx. 3–4 hours), the charming capital of Bhutan. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the Bhutan Post Office and the magnificent Tashichho Dzong.

At the Bhutan Post Office, create your own personalised Bhutanese postage stamps, print them instantly, and send postcards anywhere in the world. It’s a unique keepsake and a memorable way to celebrate your Bhutan holiday.

Later, visit Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. This grand fortress houses the Throne Room of His Majesty the King, the government secretariat, and the central monastic body. Originally rebuilt under the Third King when Thimphu became Bhutan’s capital, it remains one of the country’s finest examples of traditional Bhutanese architecture.

Note: Tashichho Dzong is open on weekdays after 5:00 PM and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends.

Made of gilded bronze, it houses 125,000 miniature Buddha statues and is believed to radiate peace and happiness across the world.

Next, visit the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal. With its distinctive goat-like body and cow-like head, the takin is deeply rooted in Bhutanese folklore. According to legend, it was created by the revered Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley. The sanctuary protects this rare Himalayan species in its natural habitat.

End the day at Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum that brings Bhutanese traditions to life. Dress in traditional attire, explore local customs, and enjoy hands-on cultural experiences, making it one of the most engaging attractions in Thimphu.
